Now more than ever, it’s essential that you take care of yourself! 

The act of self-care was one of the most important things I did while I was going through breast cancer treatment.  It was also one of the most important things I did following breast cancer treatment as a survivor.  Self-care means different things to different people but one thing is consistent- you have to take care of you.

Prior to having breast cancer I didn’t take a great deal of time to nurture myself or make myself feel good mentally and physically.  I didn’t really think about everyday stressors or not stopping to smell the roses.  I had things to do and my task list came before me.   I thought it was the way that it should be.

I had someone explain the importance of taking care of me in a simple way.  If you are on a plane they always tell you to put on your oxygen mask first, because if you run out of oxygen, you can’t help anyone else.    That really resonated with me.   You can’t care for anyone else unless you take care of yourself first. It’s not a selfish act to care for you, it’s necessary in order to be there for others.

A breast cancer diagnosis invites a great deal of stress into your world.  Just trying to work through the anxiety is a tall order.  You have to help your body by helping your mind.  I found it very therapeutic to get “away” from cancer every once in a while.  I would do things with my children, watch movies or television shows that would make me laugh or sometimes I would just get lost in a book or in my own thoughts while walking.

Taking time to check in with yourself, I believe, is beneficial to getting through your diagnosis.  You are going through a great deal, give yourself time every day, to decompress and enjoy today.
