Groceries are expensive, especially when labelled “organic.” While ideally we would purchase all our groceries from the fancy section of the supermarket, that’s rarely feasible. So if you can’t afford every purchase to come from Whole Foods, what then?

Buy organic only for the fruits and vegetables that farmers use the most pesticides on. By doing that, you are eliminating a huge number of toxins from your diet without setting your wallet on fire.

The Dirty Dozen

Thankfully the Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts out a list of the 12 most pesticide-covered produce items each year, so you know where to spend your money! Here’s this year’s list:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale
  4. Nectarines
  5. Apples
  6. Grapes
  7. Peaches
  8. Cherries
  9. Pears
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Celery
  12. Potatoes

And to make it a Baker’s Dozen, they added hot peppers.
