One thing that’s important to me as a whole-food-eater is “clean meat.” That means organic, grass-fed, free-range, heritage meats that I can trust are high quality and adding essential nutrients to my diet. While I’m lucky enough to live in an area where I can find free-range, hormone-free organic chicken in the grocery store, I know many people don’t have that luxury. With that in mind, I did a ButcherBox review of my first meat delivery.

Meet ButcherBox: Your new convenient clean meat supplier!

What is ButcherBox?

Butcher Box is a meat distributor. They connect small, local farms with you, the consumer, so you can enjoy clean meat even if you live in the heart of a city.

How Does ButcherBox Work?

You simply go online to ButcherBox.com, create an account, and then choose your meat box. You can set up how often you’d like to receive it (delivered to your doorstep — no grocery shopping!), and feel free to cancel anytime, because you’re not locked into any unnerving commitments.

What Comes in the Box?

There are two main “types” of boxes:

  1. The Custom Box: You choose exactly what kinds AND cuts of meat you want.
  2. The Classic Box: ButcherBox curates a box based on the kind of meat you want, but you may get ground beef one month and rib-eye steak the next.

The Classic Boxes come in four set-ups:

  1. Mixed (Beef, Chicken and Pork)
  2. Beef and Chicken
  3. Beef and Pork
  4. All Beef

This is great because if you primarily eat one kind of meat, or if you have access to a local farmer for some meats (say, chicken), but not for grass-fed beef.

How Much Does a ButcherBox Cost?

It’s more expensive to Classic Box: $129/month,  8-11 lbs meat
Big Box: $238/month, 16-22 lbs meat

New customers who sign up will receive 2 lbs of Ground Beef in every order for the lifetime of their subscription!

Why Should I Buy Fancy Meat?

Fewer calories

Extra omega-3s

CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), a fat that’s been studied for possible heart health benefits

I was to get free bacon, which I did, but it was cut open.  I emailed the customer service support and within 5 minutes I had a live person who was emailing with me.  She apologized and added the bacon to my next box, which I will get in addition to my next “free gift”.  Above all, she couldn’t have been nicer and it was super quick, no questions asked.

A Box Filled with Extra Surprises!

I loved the box, in addition to all my “clean meats”  I got a soft covered cook book with recipes for cooking all the meats that ButcherBox sells, and a Butcher Box reusable fabric grocery bag.

You can go to the Recipe Library, the Cut Library or the BBtv.

The recipe library gives you recipes for all the meats they offer with  prep time, servings and ratings for the recipes.

The cut library describes the cut and flavor and hints like “large enough for a holiday centerpiece “.  It then will give recommended cooking methods with instructions on how to cook the meat with a video.

The BBtvis a collection of videos you can choose from on how to cook the meats…you can choose from braise, sear, slow cook roast, etc.

Finally, your account at ButcherBox allows you to track your package, report a problem with your package or manage your subscription.

I love this, I just really love it.
